Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Marshall Munetsi has expressed his disappointment to be out of the Zimbabwe squad for AFCON.

The 29-year-old has played 34 matches for the national team since making his debut in 2018.

Zimbabwe appointed Mario Marinică as manager last month. He left the Wolves player out of the squad for November’s international break.

On Thursday, Marinică announced the final list for AFCON, starting this month in Morocco. He decided not to include the midfielder, but has called up his Wolves teammate Tawanda Chirewa.

Munetsi took to Facebook to share his frustration with Marinică’s decision to omit him. He is also unhappy with a lack of communication from the national team.

Wolves signed the player from Stade de Reims in February, and he featured regularly in the second half of last season.

The Zimbabwe international retained his place in the English club’s starting lineup this season, making 15 appearances so far.

According to Reuters, Munetsi suffered a calf injury against Nottingham Forest earlier this month. He says Wolves have kept the Zimbabwean FA in the loop about his recovery process.

Munetsi insists Marinică and the national team decided to leave him out without providing an explanation.

“This one hurts, as representing the Warriors has always been a dream, and wearing our colours is the greatest honour of my career. AFCON would have even been more significant,” he said.

“I had an injury recently, but my club, Wolves, communicated with the association that I was recovering well and even offered medical support to ensure that I could participate at the AFCON.

“Unfortunately, I received no follow-up communication, and decisions were made without clarity, speculation which wasn’t the case.”

“While I’m hurt, my unwavering support for the national team remains strong. I respect the coach’s decisions and stand behind the boys wholeheartedly. I will always be ready to defend the nation I love.”
