Following the announcement that Sunderland AFC would not be triggering the option to buy in the loan of Edouard Michut, a few eyebrows were raised.
After all, the young Frenchman had done well with the Championship side this season, and considering the relatively small amount to make the move permanent, it made a lot of sense.
However, speaking to L’Equipe, the player revealed it was actually his choice to leave Sunderland at the end of the season.
In an interview with the French newspaper set to be published in tomorrow’s print edition, the youngster revealed his reasons for turning down a permanent stay at the Stadium of Light.
He said: “The club offered me to stay. It was my decision to not stay at Sunderland. We weren’t in agreement on certain contractual points. There were also a few things on the style of play that didn’t suit me. I’m more someone who touches the ball 80-100 times per game.
“In this scheme, I was at 50-60 maximum. How I play, I need to touch the ball. I thank the president for understanding my choice of not wanting to stay.”
Despite this, the midfielder keeps a ‘very positive’ feeling about his time with Sunderland, because he learned a lot that will help him for the future, and is adamant he ‘made the right choice’ by going there.
Over the course of the season, Michut made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats, scoring one goal.
