Ousmane Dembélé is in his final year of contract at Barcelona and his situation has attracted interest from a handful of clubs, including Newcastle United.

Two days ago, we covered claims made by Foot Mercato that ‘particularly Newcastle’ have knocked on the winger’s door for a transfer. However, he was more in favour to sign a new deal with the La Liga side.

The 24-year-old is on the front page of Sport, with ‘renewal OK’ written in bold. Within the report, it’s said he had ‘options in England, much more succulent economically’ like the ones he received from the Magpies and Manchester United.

Dembélé’s agent tried to further delay talks with the Spanish giants, with the hope of taking him to another club. This was before the player got himself involved and communicated to his representatives about his firm decision to sign an extension with the Blaugrana.

Xavier Hernández has been ‘key’ in convincing the France international to stay beyond this season. The newspaper states the former Borussia Dortmund man desire is to sign a five-year deal, that is ‘very different in nature’ to the current one.

The new deal will see the wideman’s salary ‘drop significantly’, but he can earn more through bonuses, if he were to play regularly and the Spanish giants achieve success on the pitch.

Dembélé has accepted this challenge as he is of the belief the new cycle at Barca will be successful for him.

The Frenchman’s ‘decision is firm’, and it is to renew. He has already said ‘yes’ to sign a new deal at the Camp Nou.

This will not please Newcastle, who were one of the clubs quite keen to secure his services.
