Celtic may soon have to make a firm decision on Marcelo Saracchi’s future, as fresh reports from Argentina add further context to the defender’s situation ahead of the summer window.

Earlier today, we covered comments from Saracchi’s agent Marcelo Tejera confirming that Nacional and Peñarol had shown interest in the Celtic loanee. Those remarks, given to Minuto 1, indicated that clubs in Uruguay had already made contact regarding a possible move.

However, Argentine outlet TyC Sports have now provided additional details which help explain why Boca Juniors could be open to moving the player permanently once his loan spell in Scotland ends.

Boca Juniors’ foreign-player situation

Saracchi joined Celtic on loan from Boca Juniors in August 2025, with the Scottish Premiership club securing an option to make the transfer permanent.

While the defender has been gaining minutes in Scotland, Boca are already looking ahead to the composition of their squad for the next transfer window.

According to TyC Sports, one of the factors shaping Saracchi’s future is the club’s foreign-player limit. Argentine FA regulations allow clubs to register six foreign players in the squad. Only five can be included on a matchday team sheet.

Boca already have several overseas players occupying those spots. Edinson Cavani, Ander Herrera, Carlos Palacios and Ángel Romero are currently part of that group.

Saracchi is due to return to Boca once his loan spell with Celtic ends in mid-year. His presence would add another foreign player to the list. And the club may prefer to avoid that if they plan further additions.

Because of that, Boca are expected to consider offers for the left-back once he returns from Scotland.

Why this matters for Celtic

The situation creates a relatively clear decision point for Celtic in the coming months.

The Scottish club hold the option to make Saracchi’s move permanent. If they decide he fits their plans beyond this season, triggering the clause would be the simplest route to securing his future.

However, interest from clubs such as Nacional and Peñarol shows that alternatives already exist should Celtic decide against a permanent deal.

In that scenario, Boca Juniors would likely look to negotiate a transfer elsewhere in order to free up a valuable foreign-player slot in their squad.

Summer decision approaching

Taken together, the reports suggest Saracchi’s future will probably be decided relatively quickly once the season ends.

Celtic hold the most direct path if they want to keep him. However, Boca’s squad planning and the interest emerging from Uruguay mean other options are already forming in the background.

As a result, the defender’s loan spell in Scotland will probably reach a clear conclusion this summer.
