On Wednesday, Calciomercato reported that AS Roma manager José Mourinho wants to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier in January.
Earlier this month, Chris Smalling suffered an injury and it’s not clear when he will be available for selection again. His situation could see the Serie A side look for a new centre-back and this is where Dier would fit in.
According to TV Play, the Tottenham player can be the right solution for the Giallorossi.
That’s because the England international’s profile, experience and ‘explosiveness’ are all the qualities that Mourinho’s side ‘desperately need’.
The 30-year-old hasn’t made an appearance yet for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season and has a deal expiring in 2024.
It’s said the time left on his contract is the ‘most important element’ that will favour Roma general manager Tiago Pinto in a possible negotiation with Spurs for a deal in January.
Dier currently earns €5m per year and the report states this is ‘within the reach’ of the Italian club, taking the Growth Decree tax advantages into account.
As it stands, Roma haven’t yet made contact with Tottenham for the defender but have the idea to sign him in the winter market.
Mourinho knows Dier well from his time at Spurs and there seems to be a possibility for the pair to reunite at Roma.
