Juventus have confirmed their move to make Lloyd Kelly’s stay permanent, after initially signing him from Newcastle United on loan in the winter market.
Calciomercato review the Serie A club’s season and looks into why they decided to sign the centre-back from Newcastle.
The Turin club finished fourth in the table, 12 points behind league winners Napoli. The outlet believes their final standing would have been higher if Gleison Bremer hadn’t picked up a serious injury in October.
Bremer played eight games this season and the Serie A club didn’t concede in six league games. Their defensive record was good but wasn’t that impressive after his setback.
This forced Juventus to look for a new centre-back in January and it led to Kelly’s arrival from the Magpies. As they were ‘desperate’ for a defender, Calciomercato state the Italian club agreed to include the €20m purchase obligation, which has been activated.
The outlet indicates Juve’s operation for Kelly, first on loan and then buying him from the Magpies, is an example of their poor decisions.
Newcastle United made a healthy profit from the 26-year-old’s sale, after signing him for free last summer.
