Newcastle United‘s Anthony Gordon emerged as a new Barcelona target in the weeks leading up to the summer transfer window.

On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of the La Liga winners advancing a deal for the forward.

Barcelona sporting director Deco was in London to discuss a potential deal for Chelsea’s João Pedro. During this trip, he also held talks over a move for the Newcastle United star.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich have also shown interest, but the meeting with Deco has convinced the 25-year-old to pick the Catalan club.

Later that day, multiple claims from Spain and the UK reported Gordon has a deal in place with Hansi Flick’s side.

Newcastle United give approval for exit

Mundo Deportivo report Barcelona president Joan Laporta had dinner on Wednesday at Hotel Torre Melina. Deco, Alejandro Echevarría as well as agents on Dani Olmo, Juanma López and Andy Bara, joined Laporta.

During the meeting, the president found out that Newcastle United gave green light for Anthony Gordon’s sale for €70m plus €10m bonuses.

After the dinner, the reporters were waiting for Laporta and specifically asked about the England international.

Responding to that, he said: “The Gordon deal is in progress, but it’s not official yet. I’ve been informed of everything.”

He made it to Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup and England start their World Cup preparations on Monday.

Mundo state the Spanish champions want to make his signing official before he joins the national team squad next week.

Cadena Ser journalist Nil Solá states the Newcastle United man will arrive in Spain on Thursday.

“What I can tell you at this hour, Manu [Carreño], is that the player is even expected to travel tomorrow [Thursday] and be in Barcelona in the morning to iron out the last details,” he said.

“[Barca’s intention is] to finalise the last few small details so we can officially announce the signing.”
