Former Sunderland scout Massimo Mirabelli has left Inter Milan to take up a role as AC Milan’s new director of sport.
Roberto De Fanti, former Sunderland’s director of sport, has been speaking to Italian website Tutto Mercato Web on Mirabelli’s appointment at AC Milan.
Mirabelli and De Fanti both left Sunderland in a matter of weeks in 2014. De Fanti says Mirabelli left the Black Cats out of a ‘debt of honour’ to him.
He said: “Exactly. I gave up my job in February 2014, and for him as a kind of debt of honour towards me, he did the same a few weeks later. Ausilio (Inter’s sport director), of course, and rightly, couldn’t leave the opportunity to take him back at Inter.”
De Fanti also revealed he wanted Mirabelli at Sunderland as soon as he was appointed.
He added: “With Massimo we’ve known each other for some time. As soon as I had the opportunity to take the role of director of football at Sunderland, he seemed to be a natural choice to entrust.”
Mirabelli’s reputation as a scout is impressive in Italy, and it’s managed to get him one of the biggest roles in Italian football.
