David Moyes has reportedly made his former foe, the SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Röhl, a target for the summer.

The German U-21 international initially missed large parts of the first half of the season due to injury. And since coming back to full fitness, it’s thought that he has not been up to scratch.

But despite his capacious form, Everton are keen on signing the youngster, according to German outlet Kicker.

The 22-year-old still carries enormous potential – while Moyes has already seen him play on four occasions. When the German side played a quadruple against his former club West Ham United in the Europa League, with Röhl came on as a substitute on each occasion.

He only extended his contract with SC early in September 2024 and it’s reported that the club and their sporting director, Jochen Saier, are aware of the interest.

Freiburg’s record departure was the €25 million Brentford paid for Kevin Schade in 2023 but there is a feeling any move for Röhl would have to be above that.

However, the possibility of staying for another season and continuing his development is not off the cards either. Röhl has, after all, just a single assist to his name all season and no goals.
