Daniel Peretz was on the verge of a Southampton medical just a few days ago, before HSV threw a spanner in the works.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been on loan at HSV from Bayern Munich, however manager Merlin Polzin has preferred Daniel Heuer Fernandes ahead of Peretz. Subsequently, the Bayern Munich owned player has been limited to a couple of DFB-Pokal matches.
That’s obviously caused frustration for both the goalkeeper and Bayern Munich. Southampton arriving looked like something of a rescue act.
Not only would the Championship club offer more first team football, but also a buying option with a reasonable chance of use. Southampton had agreed to take out an €8m option, representing value for all involved.
HSV then decided they want some compensation to cut the loan short. Southampton and Bayern have been unwilling to play ball, and Daniel Peretz has gone on strike.
Monday’s edition of Bild reports what happened on Sunday. Peretz turned up at training, had breakfast with teammates and watched a video session. Then when the rest of the HSV squad went out to train, he did not.
The goalkeeper ‘doesn’t feel ready to train’ with HSV. He’s afraid of picking up an injury which could completely scupper his Southampton transfer.
HSV are adamant they won’t release Peretz from his loan without compensation. One possibility is Bayern Munich reimbursing the €400k loan fee, either in part or whole. That appears a reasonable step to take.
