Atlético Madrid have indentified Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero as a target to improve their defence next season.

On May 29th, AS reported Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil is expected to get involved in negotiations with Spurs.

Two days later, journalist Rubén Uría stated the centre-back will do everything possible to leave if Tottenham were to sack Ange Postecoglou. The Premier League club parted ways with the former Celtic manager on Friday and are yet to appoint his successor.

Monday’s edition of Marca states Gil is already working to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell the 27-year-old.

The La Liga club have long been aware of the Argentina international’s desire to join them and that the negotiations could drag on.

Gil has dealt with Levy to sign Kieran Trippier, Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilón from the north London club. The pair have a good relationship and therefore, the Atlético CEO is expected to lead their negotiations.

The Tottenham star’s firm desire to join the Madrid club is key for Gil when negotiating with Levy.

Marca state the Spurs supremo set a €70m price for the player. This was before they won the Europa League, which now gives them strength to keep him.

The Spurs chairman is said to be trying to extend Romero’s contract by offering an improved salary.

The World Cup winner still wants to leave Tottenham for Atlético. The report insists him putting pressure on the Premier League side could be key to convince them to lower the price below €70m.

Romero is determined to leave. Therefore, Levy must be convincing if Tottenham were to retain him and extend his contract beyond 2027.
