Tottenham defender Cuti Romero has insisted he is comfortable with the club’s fans and their ‘obsession’ with trophies, as he’s pushing for success too.
The centre-back has been speaking to Telemundo about life at Tottenham, when the question of success was put to him.
The Argentine has enjoyed plenty of it with Argentina in recent years, bagging two Copa America’s and a World Cup with his nation.
Trophies are less common at Tottenham, though, who haven’t won anything since their League Cup success in 2008.
The closest to a big trophy they’ve gotten since is the 2019 Champions League, where they reached the final but were beaten by Liverpool.
Their fans are hungry for success and have grown increasingly frustrated by a lack of trophies, despite the club continuing to grow and compete with the biggest sides, particularly in the Premier League.
They have been accused in some quarters of having an obsession with trophies while ignoring the growth of the club, particularly on a commercial basis.
Romero has no problems with the desire for success, though, and admits he’s pushing just as hard as the Tottenham fanbase behind the scenes.
“I think I’ve achieved absolutely everything with my team and it’s beautiful,” he said.
“It’s not easy, but as soon as you’ve achieved everything, you want to take it to the next level. We have the possibility because we have a beautiful group and that’s the mentality of a player who makes it to the national team.
“It wasn’t easy to get the things we got, and we don’t want to give away anything. Even if it’s a friendly or a draw, we don’t want to give away anything.
“We have the same mentality and let’s hope we keep getting things. Obviously, we’re not going to win trophies all the time, but the most important thing is to get to the top of the table.
“In terms of the club, my wish is to try and win a trophy. I try to get up every day and send a message to my team-mates. I think it’s going to be a great season, and we have a lot of games to play.”
