Earlier on Thursday, we covered quotes from Didier Deschamps, who explained his reasoning for leaving out the likes of Jonathan Clauss and Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne from his World Cup squad.
There was a belief that, having returned from injury right in time to play a few games for the Villans, the left-back would be chosen to provide competition for Théo Hernández, but it wasn’t to be.
On the face of things, the Aston Villa star took it rather well, with his wife taking to social media to reveal his children’s happiness at him staying and the prospect of going on holiday, but the feeling is different behind the scenes.
This comes through L’Equipe, who published an article on their website on Thursday afternoon about the Frenchman and how he seems ‘cursed’ ahead of big tournaments.
Benjamin Mendy was the one who was picked ahead of him for the 2018 World Cup, which hadn’t pleased Digne back then, and he made those feelings clear in an interview later on.
Whether he does the same this time around remains to be seen, and while his public reaction (he relayed his wife’s video with smiley faces) suggests perhaps more maturity, L’Equipe make it clear that ‘according to his entourage, the disappointment is nevertheless very real’.
Despite his injury issues, Digne has still made 10 appearances for Aston Villa this season, scoring two goals along the way.
