Crystal Palace target Wallace Yan has taken his first steps towards rebuilding his image at Flamengo. The youngster has begun mental coaching sessions following his recent disciplinary issues.
As reported by Globo Esporte, the 20-year-old forward has started working with Cleiton Carvalho, a mental coach who previously guided Luiz Henrique. The former Botafogo winger – now playing at Zenit – who went on to be voted South America’s best player last season.
Their first session took place on Wednesday. That was ahead of Wallace Yan’s meeting with Flamengo director José Boto and coach Filipe Luís. The club plans to fine the youngster after his ten-minute cameo and red card against Bahia.
The move marks an attempt to restore balance after a string of controversies. The Crystal Palace target has already clashed with players such as Hulk (Atlético Mineiro) and members of Fluminense’s squad. His behaviour had been under scrutiny even before the Bahia incident.
Taking criticism seriously and working to improve
Despite flashes of brilliance, including two goals at the Club World Cup, his temperament has been cited as a major concern.
People close to the player told Globo Esporte that he was “upset and reflective” about the sending-off. He recognised the need to improve emotionally. The sessions with Carvalho will focus on developing maturity, stability and focus under pressure.
Carvalho, who has worked with players since 2016, is known for using techniques such as visualisation, meditation and pre-match goal-setting.
Speaking about his methods, Luiz Henrique once explained that mental preparation had been key.
“If I didn’t have this mentoring, I wouldn’t be the player I am today. We always need someone working on our mindset to stay focused during games.”
Wallace Yan will miss Flamengo’s next match, a derby against Botafogo, due to suspension. He is expected to return for the clash with Palmeiras at the Maracanã.
For both the club and his Premier League suitors, this new chapter could prove crucial in shaping the next stage of his career. Crystal Palace will almost certainly be watching.
