Last month, journalist Carlo Pellegatti suggested Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta as a target for AC Milan.

It was merely a comment based on the Frenchman’s ability and the fact that his contract at Selhurst Park runs out in 2027. What was only a suggestion is now turning into something a bit more concrete.

Today’s Corriere dello Sport covers Milan’s hunt for a striker.

They report that the Crystal Palace star is on the Rossoneri’s shortlist, with the Italian side having tried to sign him in the past.

Even though the club admire the 28-year-old, a move is likely to be quite difficult.

Mateta’s contract situation at Crystal Palace is uncertain but the Eagles are not expected to let him go cheaply. Milan are not looking to make major investments in January and are only on the hunt for market opportunities. That means bargains.

There is belief that signing the Frenchman would require a major financial outlay, which isn’t possible next month.

Mateta is said to be keen on joining Max Allegri’s side. But for now, the move will have to wait.

The Rossoneri invested over €30m on Santiago Gimenez in January and wouldn’t want to risk another big mid-season move for a striker.
