Romelu Lukaku spent last season on loan from Chelsea to AS Roma. He scored 21 goals for the club in 47 matches, and is now expected to move to Napoli, likely again on some sort of loan deal from Chelsea.

AS Roma now need to replace him, and they’re continuing to look at Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. In the run up to the summer window it was reported in Italy that Palace had told the forward he could leave this summer for a reasonable offer.

Since then it appears he’s been offered around Serie A by agents.

Gazzetta dello Sport say he can be Roma’s ‘low cost Lukaku’. Mateta is said to want €2.5m a season, a figure which will be after tax, whereas Lukaku was paid three times that amount.

Then the Italian newspaper states Mateta would be ‘affordable’ in terms of transfer fee too. His price is put at €20-22m, but it’s claimed Roma could even get him for €18m.

That feels hugely optimistic on behalf of Roma and doesn’t sound like a great deal for Crystal Palace. They may be open to a sale but surely not at something as low as €18m.
