Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke says he is hoping to ‘relaunch his season’ with the Eagles after scoring for Belgium in the win over San Marino.
Benteke grabbed the seventh goal of the game as the Reds Devils racked up nine goals against the minnows.
It was a big moment for Benteke, who hadn’t managed a goal for his country since scoring against Russia in March 2017.
Indeed, it was Benteke’s first goal for some time, with him not having managed a goal for Palace since scoring against Arsenal in April of this year.
The last few years have not been kind to Benteke, who has managed just four goals in his last two seasons at Selhurst Park.
He’s now hoping this strike, which has broken his latest barren patch of form, can help him start firing again for Crystal Palace as it’s helped him get out of a ‘negative spiral’.
“I am very happy. Both for myself and for the team,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“It is a relief for me that I was allowed to participate in this match. Every time the national coach calls on me, I try to be there.
“I tried to give something back to him again. I was hungry for that, and it helped me in my head. It caused even more relief.
“I know my qualities and know what I can do, but there was the frustration of not having scored for a long time.
“I hope I get out of that negative spiral with this. I am taking that goal to Crystal Palace and hope to relaunch my season there.”
