Monday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has Frenkie de Jong on the front page, and it’s explained a meeting is set to be held to decide the player’s future.
Much of Barcelona’s summer business depends on what happens with the midfielder. Xavi Hernandez is set to speak to Barca’s leaders, and his opinion will be key.
Mundo explain that despite Manchester United being keen on signing him, De Jong has repeatedly made it clear to those close to him that he wants to stay at Barcelona. His decision is not only related to football, he’s happy with his life in the city and has only recently finished renovating a house there.
Should Xavi decide De Jong is indispensable then the player has a good chance of staying. If he feels he can do without the Dutchman, and that he’d prefer the reinforcements his sale would make possible, then Xavi himself will have to inform the player, which Barcelona will hope makes him open to an exit.
De Jong is aware of Manchester United interest, but it’s said to have ‘fallen on deaf ears’ at this point, given his desire to stay where he is.
Regarding Chelsea links, Mundo Deportivo insist all Barcelona have heard of their reported interest has come from the UK media.
It’s denied that the player was discussed when Todd Boehly travelled to the Catalan city and met Barca officials. The report also states there’s been no contact between Chelsea and the player’s entourage.
