On Tuesday morning, Portuguese newspapers made it sound like Viktor Gyökeres’ transfer from Coventry City to Sporting was very close to happening.
That’s because by the time the printed editions were done, Lions’ president Frederico Varandas was in England working to finally close the deal for the striker.
It turns out the Sporting chief has now returned to Lisbon, and as reported by Record, there’s still no agreement with Coventry City.
The outlet shows a picture of Varandas, followed by director Hugo Viana, and says there was no white smoke in the last round of negotiations.
It’s claimed that Coventry City did not accept the latest offer from Sporting, which was €18m plus €3.5m in performance bonuses.
Even though the parties are set to continue to negotiate, Record says that this was supposed to be the final offer from the Lions.
It’s well known that there are English clubs who are also interested in Gyökeres, so a bigger offer from the Premier League or the Championship should be the most plausible explanation for Coventry City to play so hard in the talks.
