Coventry City have taken their interest in Matheus Martins a step further. Reports from Brazil now claim the newly promoted Premier League side have already submitted an offer for the Botafogo winger.
Coventry are expected to strengthen multiple areas of their squad this summer. Wide attacking positions are among those likely to receive attention.
The 22-year-old had previously been linked with Coventry as one of several European clubs monitoring his situation. However, the latest update suggests Frank Lampard’s side have moved beyond the scouting stage and into negotiations.
According to ESPN Brazil, Coventry have presented a proposal. The fee is still undisclosed, but the player’s representatives are currently evaluating the conditions on offer.
Coventry City make first move
Matheus Martins has become one of the players Botafogo are willing to discuss this summer. The Brazilian club look to improve their financial position.
The winger has attracted attention from several countries, and Coventry City’s approach appears to be the first concrete move reported from England.
There is competition, however. The same report states that a Turkish club also submitted an offer worth €4.5m (£3.8m), only for Botafogo to reject it immediately. The Brazilian side are holding out for at least €8m (£6.8m) before considering a sale.
That figure is already below the €10m (£8.5m) Botafogo paid Udinese to secure the player’s permanent transfer in 2024.
Growing list of suitors
The update also expands the list of clubs credited with interest in the winger.
Feyenoord, Celta Vigo and Krasnodar had already been mentioned in Brazilian reports, while CSKA Moscow and Real Betis are now also said to be monitoring the situation.
For Coventry City, that means any deal is unlikely to be straightforward despite their early move.
Matheus Martins is under contract until December 2028, which gives Botafogo a strong negotiating position. At the same time, the club’s financial situation means they are open to offers if their valuation is met.
The former Watford player remains an intriguing option for English clubs. He already has experience of British football, is still only 22, and has contributed five goals and one assist in 26 appearances this year despite recent injury issues.
