As Coventry City get ready for their return to the Premier League, they can take advantage of a major transfer opportunity.

The player in question is Lois Openda, who has been labelled as one of Juventus’ worst signings ever. He joined on loan from RB Leipzig last summer, with an obligation to buy.

This was triggered when Juve were confirmed to have finished within the top-ten. As a result, they have to pay €40m to sign the Belgian, who scored just one Serie A goal. He’s played only 652 minutes, struggling under both Igor Tudor and Luciano Spalletti.

Some weeks ago, Sport Witness covered Leeds United’s interest in the striker. It is now Coventry City who have a chance of signing the ex-Leipzig man.

Juventus consider moves

Gazzetta dello Sport report that along with Jonathan David, Openda is a key candidate to depart Turin. Spalletti isn’t impressed and this is leading CEO Damien Comolli to consider how to proceed.

The Frenchman is pondering whether it is better to execute a permanent sale and accept a capital loss, or whether a loan could be a better option.

Regardless, it is Coventry City who have ‘conducted an enquiry’ for Openda. They can soon progress further towards a move, with German clubs also in the race.

The 26-year-old currently earns €4m per season. His performances haven’t matched that wage.

This isn’t the first time Openda has been linked with a switch to England. Even before he moved to Juve, several clubs were keen and a move to the Premier League could finally be on the cards.

Coventry City could be the ideal destination. Established Premier League sides can see a move for him as a big risk, considering the previous season. The Sky Blues are new in the top-flight and need players who have operated at the highest level.

This would be one way for Openda to play at a low-key destination and rebuild his reputation. He is still at a pretty decent age to get another big move later and Frank Lampard’s side wouldn’t mind him giving him the springboard.

However, a loan deal would make much more sense. There is still a chance a move doesn’t work out. The Sky Blues may not want to take the risk and seek assurance before a permanent deal.
