Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario has been constantly mentioned as a target for Inter Milan. He has now been backed to make a major move by an Italian goalkeeping legend.

Last week, Sport Witness covered claims from Calciomercato, who suggested that the Nerazzurri are seeking permission from the club’s ownership to push through a move for the 29-year-old.

Yann Sommer is about to leave Inter, with his contract expiring in the summer. The Tottenham player is seen as the most viable replacement, having previously impressed at Empoli in Serie A.

As talk in Italy about the player grows, Gianluca Pagliuca has tipped Vicario for a move to the San Siro.

Inter seen as best option for Vicario

The Italian goalkeeping legend spoke to Calciomercato about Inter’s hunt for a new stopper.

He believes that even if Tottenham are relegated, it shouldn’t harm the player’s reputation at all.

Pagliuca said: “He played in the world’s top league, at a club that a few years ago was aiming to win the Premier League. Last year he won the Europa League, even though this year they’re almost at risk of relegation.”

The 59-year-old insists Vicario couldn’t make a better decision than joining Inter in the summer.

“He couldn’t make a better decision. If a team that’s just reached the Champions League final calls you, how can you say no?

“Now he’s had a bad season, he hasn’t performed as well as in his first year, but we’ve seen that the whole team has had problems, they changed coaches, then he was replaced in the Champions League, and whoever took his place has been disastrous.”

Vicario is a ‘transfer opportunity’

Pagliuca believes the Spurs player isn’t the best Italian goalkeeper but he will be more than an appropriate option for Inter.

“Vicario is definitely one of the best Italian goalkeepers around. He’s not a top player yet, but I think if he were to actually arrive, it would be a choice that goes beyond his nationality.

“Vicario will be chosen for his profile and that’s it. And it really seems like a transfer opportunity. Vicario is very good between the posts. His weakness is his inability to come off the line.”

Tottenham exit can come at the right time

Vicario is now 29 and has endured months of struggle. His current Tottenham contract runs out in the summer of 2028, which makes 2026 the best time to sell him. From 2027 onwards, his value could decline, especially if his performances don’t improve.

If Spurs sign a viable replacement, they wouldn’t regret selling Vicario. He clearly has a market in Italy and this could be the time to capitalise.
