On Thursday, we covered an interview Birmingham City’s Willum Þór Willumsson had granted to the Icelandic media whilst away on international duty, and the midfielder made it very clear he was thrilled to join the League One club and has big plans for the future.

Inevitably, the 25-year-old talked about a quick return to the Championship, but he also made it clear the Premier League is in the longer term plans at the Blues.

That was easily enough to keep the player happy, but there’s been another nice surprise for him at Birmingham City. A few days after Willumsson had signed up, Alfons Sampsted also joined the League One side.

It’s nice enough for the pair that they’re both from Iceland, but the relationship is rather stronger than that. The duo were childhood friends and grew up together in Kópavogur, they also played football together when younger.

Willumsson has been speaking to mbl.is, and spoke to them of his surprise: “It was unexpected and fun. This is the first time I have an Icelandic teammate abroad. We have known each other since we were 4-5 years old, and I could hardly believe that this was happening.”

The pair are currently with the Iceland national side and are facing Montenegro and Turkey in the UEFA Nations League.

“I like these games. It’s always fun to play in Iceland and it would give us a lot to start strong. We have a great game against Montenegro to get off to a good start. I think we have a good chance in a tough game. If we play our football, we can show that we are a better team.”
