Sam Beukema joined Napoli from Bologna in the summer transfer window. Tottenham Hotspur have now emerged as a possible destination for the Dutchman.
The centre-back had been key to Bologna’s rise to European football under Thiago Motta and Vincenzo Italiano. His move to Naples came amidst a fair amount of hype, having also played in the Champions League for the Rossoblu.
Things have been a bit indifferent at Napoli, with Beukema having played 18 times in Serie A. He has started the last two Serie A games, doing quite well but Antonio Conte hasn’t always viewed him as a regular in the backline.
The idea of his exit from the Italian champions has gained ground, with Tottenham mentioned as a destination.
Swap deal involving Cristian Romero
Journalist Emmanuele Cammaroto reports for NapoliMagazine about Napoli’s dealings for the summer, indicating their interest in Spurs’ Cristian Romero.
The Argentine is a big dream for Conte, who is interested in parting ways with Sam Beukema and Juan Jesus. There is belief that the Dutchman ‘could end up in London’, with Tottenham interested in him.
The idea of a swap plus cash deal has been floated by the journalist. Beukema is valued at €25m, with Romero’s valuation much higher than that. To bring the former Atalanta player to Naples, the Partenopei will have to insert cash in a deal.
This will be a complex move but there is a possibility Beukema alone can be involved in a move which takes him to the English capital. The Napoli idea of Romero is attractive, however, reality may see him beyond them.
Our take: Beukema could be a smart move for Tottenham
While things haven’t always gone to plan for Sam Beukema at Napoli, Spurs could be a viable destination for him.
There is enough evidence for his quality. At Bologna, he was very reliable on the ball in a system where his team often dominated possession. The Netherlands man is also very good at carrying it forward and using his physical traits when winning the ball back.
At 27, he is increasingly at the peak of his powers and needs a club where he can play regularly.
