A lot was said about Diego Costa’s future during the summer transfer window. The Spaniard reportedly wanted to return to Atletico Madrid, and many claimed Chelsea could give in to the player’s yearning for a Spain return.
Costa suffered a dip in form last season, but is back to his best this season. It wouldn’t make too much sense for Chelsea to sell such a prolific goalscorer.
With 9 goals and 3 assists to his name this season, Costa has led the way for others. According to Spanish newspaper Sport on Sunday, Antonio Conte wants to secure Diego Costa’s future at the club, and has asked for his contract to be renewed.
Costa’s current deal expires in 2019 and the striker is earning €140,000/week, and Chelsea are ready to offer him €200,000/week to extend that.
Sport believe Atletico Madrid won’t be able to pay Costa at such high wages, and that should be enough to keep him in England. Given Costa’s affinity for the Spanish club, and love for Madrid, he’d probably accept less in a return scenario, but not a huge amount less.
The 28-year-old looks very impressive this season, and it’s likely Chelsea will do everything to keep him at the club… especially if Sport are right and Conte has now demanded it.
