There’s less than a month left for the biggest game of the year in South America, as Flamengo and River Plate are set to face each other for the final of Copa Libertadores.
Problem is: we don’t know when and where will it be played.
The match had been originally scheduled to be hosted in Santiago on the 23rd of November. This would be the first time the tournament would have a single game in the final.
But the Chilean capital isn’t the best place to host such a big event at this time, since the population has turned against the government and protests have been chaotic for a couple of weeks now.
The Conmebol tried to stay calm for a while, claiming that nothing would change the match, but with the situation getting totally out of control, they have started admitting their second thoughts about the final.
As reported by Globo Esporte today, Chile have cancelled two important events which were scheduled for the next two months: the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation in November and the Santiago Climate Change Conference in December.
Conmebol were using these events as a guarantee that things would be fine in a short time, especially because the likes of Vladimir Putin and Xin Jing Ping would be present. But now, they are changing their minds.
Conmebol could take the final to Paraguay or Uruguay in case they keep the idea of having a single game. But reports from the Argentine press say there’s the possiblity of doing the old way, with two legs, one in Buenos Aires and the other in Rio de Janeiro.
This is another show of incompetence from the organization which had to take the final between Boca Juniors and River Plate to Spain last year. Now they confirm they’re not prepared for any kind of adversity.
