Vincenzo Montella arriving at Sevilla has provided a reason, or an excuse, for Steven N’Zonzi to stay at the club.

Marca report on Tuesday that convincing N’Zonzi to stay has been a priority for Montella, and: ‘The coach met before the end of the year with the player in his office and the Frenchman has let him know that he can count on him.’

The Spanish newspaper then go on to add: ‘It is true that N’Zonzi has not completely closed the door to leave. The month of January is long and he’s still waiting for the offer of some great club who sees the need to have a player of his characteristics. Meanwhile, he will continue playing with Sevilla.’

Everton have been the English club most strongly linked with N’Zonzi in recent weeks. The midfielder travelling to London in December gave a chance for Arsenal rumours to surface, but it didn’t seem as believable as the Everton claims.

Sam Allardyce has made it clear he’s open to signing the Sevilla player, and N’Zonzi is a prominent name on Everton’s list of potential January signings.

There’s been no offers whatsoever for N’Zonzi yet, report Marca, and his behaviour at Sevilla, and indifferent form, hasn’t attracted interest.

Reading between the lines it seems clear N’Zonzi thought there’d be approaches, and attractive ones at that, but it’s not happened yet. Whether Everton would be the ‘great club’ he’s looking for would potentially depend on what kind of salary they’d be willing to offer.

Until there is an offer, and one which pleases N’Zonzi enough, he’ll continue to be committed to the club who pay his wages, which is good of him.
