Even though the Dutch media is now accepting the idea that Matthijs de Ligt could join Manchester United this summer, there are some interesting thoughts about it.
With the De Telegraaf today reporting the Red Devils’ efforts to land the Bayern Munich defender, the move was today a subject in the Kick-Off podcast.
In quotes brought via MSN, Mike Verweij, who broke the news for De Telegraph, was the first to make some comments on the possibility, claiming that the transfer could be good for both Manchester United and de Ligt.
“I don’t foresee any problems in that. De Ligt should be able to come out of that. He probably also wants to leave Bayern Munich, because the prospects there are a bit less anyway.”
Now as Valentijn Driessen talks about the transfer, he points out that even though the move may work out, it shows that Erik ten Hag continues to focus on players who worked with him before.
“De Ligt did a great six months, but they would obviously rather lose him. Of course it says everything that he didn’t make it in Munich either and the same goes for his time at Juventus. Now then with Ten Hag hopefully we will get to see the old De Ligt there. I think it will be good for him, but I do think it’s a sign of weakness from Ten Hag.
“He now keeps coming back to guys he has worked with. And he also wants Frenkie de Jong. He keeps going back to that year of success.”
Earlier on Monday, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed that Bayern Munich have set a price for the centre-back’s sale, as they want at least €50m plus bonuses.
Since we’re still early in the transfer window, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Manchester United can get the transfer done for less.
However, it seems they’re still to place their first bid.
