Walter Benitez signed for Crystal Palace in July as a free agent. He arrived from PSV, having also arrived there as a free agent from Nice in 2022.

It was unlikely the 32-year-old would automatically displace Dean Henderson and become Crystal Palace’s undisputed first choice. Indeed, so far this season under Oliver Glasner he’s made two appearances for the Eagles, both in the EFL Cup.

TyC Sports, the largest sports outlet in Argentina, have now shared concern over his situation. There’s a worry Benitez won’t be in his best shape for the World Cup.

A season of sitting on the bench with Aston Villa is causing some worry, which feels a little over the top. TyC Sports even say the current situation situation is ‘far from what he imagined’.

There’s even a suggestion it could cost him his squad place at the World Cup.

Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez is the undisputed first choice for Argentina. When he was rested recently against Angola, it was Marseille stopper Gerónimo Rulli who got the nod.

There’d have to be something of a disaster among Argentina’s goalkeepers for Benitez’s situation to have serious importance. From his personal perspective, he surely knew Henderson was likelier to start and therefore can’t be too shocked.
