Aston Villa were successful in avoiding relegation in the 2019/20 season, despite having the second worst defensive record in the league.

Dean Smith’s side conceded 67 goals and only Norwich City, who finished at the bottom of the table, let in more [75] goals than Villa.

Over the weekend, The Telegraph reported the Premier League side are ‘keen to sign’ Kieran Trippier to improve their defence for the new season.

It was also stated the Atlético Madrid player is a priority target for Smith in the right-back position.

The England international, who left Tottenham Hotspur for Atlético last summer, has cemented a place in their starting lineup in his debut season in Spain.

AS have relayed the Telegraph’s report in today’s edition of the newspaper, and state the interest from Villa ‘does not go beyond a mere survey’.

In addition to this, the English side have not made a ‘specific offer’ for the 29-year-old.

The report explains it seems ‘complicated’ for Diego Simeone’s side to consider negotiating Trippier’s transfer, despite having Santiago Arias and Šime Vrsaljko as the other two right backs in the squad.
