Spanish side Alavés released today an official statement on plans for their 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated next year.

The club’s idea was to have a friendly match against Liverpool, but they don’t see to be very confident about it.

Alavés now claims that due to the pandemic, it’s unlikely that it will be possible to arrange such a match, both because of the calendar and due to safety concerns.

“The desired Alavés – Liverpool match has, therefore, well-known difficulties,” the club says.

“The club continues to work on this possibility, but’s is a very complex project at the moment due to the circumstances that exist in the world. An encounter that moves away for health security reasons.”

The reason Alavés picked Liverpool for a celebration match is because of the UEFA Cup final in 2001. That was the Spanish side’s most important match in history, even though they ended up losing the title in a dramatic way.

That’s probably a game which still stays in the memory of fans from both clubs. Following a 4-4 draw in regular time, Liverpool found a winner in the 116th minute with an own goal from Alavés fullback Geli.

Liverpool’s goals were scored by Markus Babbel, Steven Gerrard, Gary McAllister and Robbie Fowler.
