Portuguese national team manager Fernando Santos has named the squad which will face Luxembourg and Ukraine in upcoming Euro Qualifiers.

Unsurprisingly, one of the players on the list was Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, who’s been great for club and country for some time.

The Portuguese press has been giving big coverage to his recent controversy.

Bernardo was charged with misconduct by the FA over a tweet he sent to teammate Benjamin Mendy. He’s alleged to have committed an aggravated breach of rules as there was reference ‘expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin’.

So in a press conference today, Fernando Santos couldn’t avoid being asked about the case. The manager tried not to say a lot, but claims the Manchester City player isn’t being treated fairly.

“I would have to do a thorough analysis and talk socially about what I think and it would be a very long conversation. So just two words: completely absurd. Bernardo is one of the players I know with the most human and social character. He doesn’t deserve this,” said Fernando Santos (via O Jogo).

Fernando Santos’ speech is pretty much the same as Pep Guardiola’s, who praised Bernardo Silva’s personality.

The midfielder has formally been charged by the Football Association this week, and now has a week to appeal.
