Wednesday’s edition of Spanish newspaper AS has an article on Cristian Romero potentially moving from Tottenham Hotspur to Atlético Madrid this summer, and it drips with cockiness on behalf of the La Liga club and their transfer chances.

Diego Simeone is said to be personally aware the defender ‘will do everything possible’ to make sure he gets the move, and personal terms aren’t thought to be an issue.

AS then state: ‘The Madrid club itself also knows that Cuti Romero’s mind is already at the Metropolitano… even though Tottenham is currently fighting for the Europa League, an important title for the Premier League club.’

Surely the trophy should be very important for Romero too. The 27-year-old may be decorated for Argentina, but he hasn’t yet won a thing at club level.

When it comes to price, the Spanish newspaper states: ‘In England, it’s been suggested that Atlético could spend €70m on this player. That won’t be the case. The Madrid club won’t reach that amount. Los rojiblancos will put €40m on the table in a deal that could be close to €50m.’

Obviously, it is not for Atlético Madrid, or AS for that matter, to decide what fee Tottenham will have to accept for their defender.

This one looks like it could turn messy, especially if Atlético Madrid are as cocky in their approach is suggested and if Cristian Romero begins to agitate for a move.
