Feyenoord’s move for Brighton and Hove Albion winger Ibrahim Osman has been questioned, as they already had a player in the squad ready to step up.

Journalist Valentijn Driessen covers the move from the Dutch side today, relayed by Voetbal 4U, and questions why they’ve done it when their own Leo Sauer could have been given his chance.

Sauer is spending the season on loan at NAC Breda after working his way through the Feyenoord ranks after arriving from MSK Zilina on a permanent basis in July last year.

It appears the Dutch club decided he was not ready to make the step up to the first team this season, deciding to send him out on loan to gain experience and development elsewhere.

They instead decided to enter the market to replace the departed Yankuba Minteh, agreeing a deal with Brighton to sign the highly rated Ibrahim Osman on loan until the end of the season.

That deal was confirmed earlier this week and Osman has been earning plenty of praise since, with manager Brian Priske clearly enthusiastic about the possibility of working with him. Indeed, he recently described the deal as a godsend.

Driessen is less convinced than the Feyenoord boss and believes questions should be asked about why Sauer wasn’t give his chance.

“The question is why Te Kloese rents a nineteen-year-old winger with Osman and rents out the more or less self-trained eighteen-year-old winger Sauer to NAC,” he is quoted as saying to De Telegraaf.

“Although he has not been allowed to gain experience in the Champions League, the Slovakian international is guaranteed to make many playing minutes in the Eredivisie.

“On the other hand, that (Champions League football) made it interesting for Brighton to rent Osman out.”
