PSV have compiled their list of ‘planned reinforcements’ for next season, and Siem De Jong isn’t on it. Spending a year at PSV on loan from Newcastle United, De Jong hasn’t been able to impress enough to convince the club to make a move for him.
It’s been ruled out. This isn’t just a wait and see, PSV technical director Marcel Brands has confirmed to Eindhoven Dagblad that De Jong is free to return to Newcastle United this week.
From De Jong’s perspective, he’s said to be ‘keen to seize his chances’ in the Premier League, but he’s likely going to have to convince Rafael Benitez.
De Jong has a Newcastle contract until June 2020, so he’s safe in that respect, and won’t simply be sent out anywhere. However, six Eredivisie goals and a single assist are unlikely to have done much to convince Benitez that De Jong can push Newcastle forward in the Premier League next season.
