Sevilla’s bitterness over Monchi’s move to Aston Villa stopped a deal for Marcos Acuña happening in the summer, even though the Villans offered what the Spanish side were asking for.
That’s according to Vamos Mi Sevilla, relaying information from COPE+, who say the defender was left with ‘monumental anger’ at the failure of the transfer.
Acuña was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa throughout the summer transfer window, with Villa keen to build Unai Emery’s squad at the time.
A deal seemed like a simple one to do but never came to fruition, with the negotiations between the two sides proving difficult as the weeks progressed.
It eventually never happened after Acuña picked up an injury but COPE+ now report that it was actually Sevilla’s bitterness over Monchi’s move to Villa Park earlier in the summer.
They explain that Sevilla had been ‘stung’ by that move and so initially requested a large amount for the Argentine full-back.
Aston Villa first offered €5m plus €2m in bonuses, but Victor Orta responded with a request of €7m plus €2m in bonuses. Villa decided to sit on that but came back a few days offering that deal.
However, they were left surprised when Sevilla rejected it outright, a decision that left Acuña with ‘monumental anger’.
The fact that Monchi was behind the move hadn’t pleased Sevilla and their bitterness over his departure led them to ‘cut short the departure’.
That’s proven to be an unwise move as he’s missed most of the season with various injuries, something we’re sure hasn’t improved that anger he felt at seeing Aston Villa’s offer rejected.
