Eric Dier hasn’t made an appearance for Tottenham Hotspur this season and his future at the Premier League side remains uncertain.
The defender’s deal expires in 2024 and last week, Calciomercato stated he hasn’t yet made a decision on whether or not to sign an extension.
For the past few days, claims from Italy stated that AS Roma have identified the 29-year-old as a target and their interest is further discussed by Il Romanista.
The Serie A side are aiming to bring in a new centre-back in January and Jérôme Boateng, who is currently without a club, is one of the targets.
The alternative to the German is the Tottenham player, who won’t be that expensive since his deal expires next summer. José Mourinho knows him well from his time at the north London club and the report states Roma are monitoring him, along with Boeteng.
Meanwhile, Calciomercato say Roma general manager Tiago Pinto has started working on a low-cost operation in January. Dier is Mourinho’s favourite target but the outlet states the Italian club will face competition from Sporting.
It’s said Sporting are ‘willing to shell out a few million’ to bring their former player back to the club, and this has seen Roma show interest in Genoa’s Radu Drăgușin in the last few hours.
Having identified Dier as a favourite, Mourinho could be disappointed if Sporting were to beat Roma to sign him in the winter market.
