Dating back to before the World Cup even started, Chelsea’s apparent interest in Matias Vecino was always intrinsically associated to Maurizio Sarri.

That’s why nothing happened while Antonio Conte was still in charge, and explains why the trail went cold when Jorginho arrived.

Already gifted a midfielder, one he already knows extremely well, the Italian manager then appeared to request reinforcements in other areas of the pitch, like Daniele Rugani for the defence or Gonzalo Higuain to help up front.

Unfortunately, the deal sending Leonardo Bonucci back to Juventus, with the Argentinian forward and Mattia Caldara going the other way, messed up Sarri’s plans, and Thibaut Courtois’ latest tantrum has thrown another spanner in the works.

Despite all this, Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday claim Vecino would still be available for Chelsea, but only at €35m.

The Uruguay international isn’t officially up for sale, but should an offer giving them the chance to make a profit appear in their inbox, they would find it hard to say no.

Something for Chelsea and Sarri to think about with just two days left in the transfer window.
