Earlier on Monday, it was revealed that Chelsea had made an attempt to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona over the summer.
It never happened, and the Blues ended up signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get a second chance at getting the Dutchman.
Depay is currently far from pleased with how things are going for him in Barcelona, to the point where the club would be willing to let him go for free in January, which could help Chelsea.
The problem, however, is that he doesn’t want to end up at any old club, with Sport revealing that while Barcelona ‘would welcome the departure’ of the player, ‘not everything will be as easy as it seems’.
That’s because Depay ‘sets the conditions’ of his departure, and they make it a little bit tougher for a deal to be struck.
His requests are for him to ‘collect all of his salary and would only agree to leave for a Champions League sports project where he has a leading role’.
Now, we aren’t saying Chelsea could offer him that, but Chelsea could probably offer him that, with Graham Potter’s side in need of attacking reinforcement going forward.
Whether this is something the Blues would be ready to put forward remains to be seen, but Barcelona certainly hope it, because if Depay doesn’t get what he wants, ‘he will stay at the club until June’.
That’s regardless of the fact that he is ‘very upset because he knows that the Blaugrana environment has doubted his professionalism while recovering from an injury that has been getting more complicated’.
