Over the course of the summer, Thomas Tuchel wanted another right-back, which is why we saw a lot of talk about Chelsea being interested in Denzel Dumfries.

Following his Euro 2020 performances, the Dutchman’s stature in world football has grown quite a lot, which led to his move from PSV to Inter that same summer.

His task was to replace Achraf Hakimi, which he has somewhat done, and the interest from Chelsea only grew stronger.

However, with Inter initially thinking they were going to sell Milan Skriniar, they didn’t want to lose two key players, and so they blocked advances from the Blues for their right-back.

As Corriere dello Sport point out on Thursday, though, ‘the scenario has changed’, with the Slovakian now set to stay and the Serie A side needing to make around €60m by next June to balance their accounts.

Currently valued at ‘well over €40m’, there is hope from Inter’s end that a good World Cup will make that grow, at which point they would be willing to sell.

They recall Chelsea’s interest, and that the Premier League side ‘wanted to include the Dutchman in the Romelu Lukaku deal’.

That didn’t fly with them, but times have changed and there is now ‘absolute willingness to talk about Dumfries’ in the coming months, and ‘the most advantageous solution would be a sale as early as January, provided that the fullback remains on loan’ until the end of the season.

Corriere do state that the plan is ‘to convince Chelsea’ to do just that, but the Italians first need to find out what the Blues’ plans are.

It’s stated ‘the appointment to discover them is at the end of the World Cup’, with Inter hoping in the meantime that their player increases his value with great performances in Qatar.
