In January, we covered a report from Mundo Deportivo, who claimed that Manchester City are ‘betting very hard’ on Matthijs de Ligt of Ajax.
Last month, another Catalan newspaper Sport reported that City interest in the Netherlands international causes the ‘price to skyrocket’.
Journalist Oriol Domènech spoke about the defender on TV3 and his comments have been relayed in today’s edition of AS.
It’s claimed the 19-year-old could make a switch to Barcelona in the summer, but competition from other clubs could be an issue. Ajax have set the asking price at €70m for the centre-back.
Domènech says the La Liga winners must now wait and see if the clubs like Manchester City, Juventus, Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain would make an approach for De Ligt after this season.
The report does not provide an update on the possibility of the aforementioned clubs making a bid for De Ligt.
Should any or all of these clubs look to make an approach for the Dutchman, then Domènech claims Barcelona will not be able to handle an auction.
