Mexican side Chivas are ‘waiting for Newcastle’ before formalising an offer for striker Santiago Muñoz.

That’s according to journalist Fernando Esquivel, who says there has already been contact between Chivas, Santos, the player and his agent regarding the possible move.

Muñoz has been on loan with Newcastle from Santos Laguna since August 2021, when he arrived as a reinforcement for the Magpies’ Under 23 side.

The move caused something of a stir at the time thanks to the player’s name being similar to that of fictional character Santiago Muñez, the main character in the film Goal! who arrives at Newcastle as an unknown and quickly develops into a world star.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case for Muñoz, who has only managed nine appearances in total for the club scoring and assisting once in those.

The loan deal has been nothing short of a disaster and numerous reports have made it clear that Newcastle will not be taking up their option to sign him permanently.

A return to Santos Laguna appears to be on the cards but, according to Esquivel, he could quickly be on the move once he does so.

He reports that Chivas are interested in the 20-year-old striker and have already held talks with Santos, the player and his agent.

According to him, they are ‘waiting for Newcastle’ to make their decision on a possible transfer but they ‘formalise’ their own offer for him.

Chivas Pasion, which is part of the Bolavip network, cover his comments and also add that sporting director Fernando Hierro and manager Veljko Paunovic would agree with the signing of the Santos Laguna striker.

They add that there have been ‘no indications’ that Newcastle want to keep him so he is expected back at Santos, but so far the Magpies don’t seem to have made that official.

Everything depends on that choice, and the failure to make it has seemingly left his other suitors hanging for the time being.
