PSV Eindhoven should jump at the chance to sell Xavi Simons if the likes of Manchester United ‘get involved’ in the race for the player.
That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad journalist Rik Elfrink, who says there is a feat at the club that a release clause for a low fee could be activated next summer.
Simons was one of the stars of the show for PSV this season, scoring 19 and assisting nine goals in 34 games in the Eredivisie.
That’s led to speculation about his future, particularly as former club Paris Saint Germain have an option to take him back to France should they wish to for the next two years.
He’s also been linked with a move to the Premier League, where Arsenal have been credited with an interest and Manchester United named as potential suitors given Erik ten Hag knows the Eredivisie well and brought two summer signings from the league last summer.
They’re yet to be fully in the mix but Elfrink believes PSV should jump at the chance to sell to Manchester United if that changes in the coming weeks.
“If he now goes back to Paris Saint-Germain, it will ultimately be an uncertain adventure in terms of playing time,” he said.
“That boy left there last year, eventually wanted to sign a five-year contract here. How likely is it that he will return to the same environment a year later?
“At PSV they are not so afraid of it, they have the feeling: we are reasonably sure that he does not want to go back to Paris. If Manchester United gets involved, or a club just below the absolute top, PSV can ask for what they want.
“If PSV didn’t sell him for €35m, you run the risk that you might only get eight, six or €10m next year, depending on the period.”
