With attempts to bring Jérémie Boga from Atalanta throughout the transfer window, it was clear that Leicester City were looking for a new forward to help bolster Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
However, it appears that when that avenue became difficult to pull off, they turned their attention elsewhere, specifically to Austria.
That’s where Sékou Koïta plays for RB Salzburg, where he has only featured sporadically this season due to injury issues.
That being said, the talent is clearly there, as the Mali international has scored 30 goals in 63 appearances in all competitions for his side, as well as picked up 14 assists, which is why Leicester will have been keen.
Despite his current problems, Salzburg were reluctant to let him go, as explained by L’Equipe in an article detailing Marseille’s interest in the player.
In the end, the Ligue 1 side decided to look elsewhere due to concerns over his fitness, but that wasn’t the case for Leicester and Hoffenheim, who are both said to have been ‘ready to put €10m or so’ on the talented left-footed forward.
Salzburg, though, ‘refused the two concrete approaches’, and stopped him from moving in January, perhaps hoping that a fruitful and injury free second half of the campaign for the striker could see his value rise a bit more.
