Wanting a new attacking option in January, as shown by their reported interest in a number of strikers this month, Newcastle have, once again, turned their attention to France.

According to L’Equipe, Rafa Benitez’s side have enquired about Lyon’s Martin Terrier, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Strasbourg after his transfer from Lille.

The French newspaper state the Spanish manager is the one who targeted the 21-year-old after watching him a ’number of times’, ‘convinced’ by his ‘potential’.

Newcastle’s enquiry was met with a refusal by the Ligue 1 side, who aren’t prepared to sell, and nor are they willing to let him go on loan for the next six months, which the Premier League club also put forward.

L’Equipe state that’s how things are ‘for now’, suggesting the situation could evolve over the next week or so.

The forward, who can play down the left or through the middle, has been a backup player for the French side this season, starting just four league games so far (21 appearances in all competitions), scoring two goals.
