Ajax’s impending appointment of Liverpool’s Julian Ward is “laughable” and a sign of the problems at the Dutch club.
That’s according to journalist Valentijn Driessen and Johan Derksen, relayed by FC Update, who don’t see the Liverpool transfer guru proving to be a smart appointment for the Dutch giants.
Ward is set to leave his role as Liverpool’s sporting director at the end of the season, with the Reds announcing his plans back in November.
Ward assumed the role from his predecessor Michael Edwards last summer and had been widely credited as playing a major role in the success Liverpool have enjoyed in recent years, particularly in the transfer market.
At first it was believed he would step away from football for a period but he has continued to be linked with roles and now appears to be closing in on a move to Ajax.
They are keen to reshape their footballing structure after a disastrous year that saw them lose key players last summer and recruit poorly to replace them.
The deal has seemingly been edging closer for weeks, but Driessen and Derksen are less than impressed by the potential arrival.
“Gerry Hamstra goes out and then Ward comes. No one has ever heard of him. He is in his thirties, is at Liverpool and has to help Ajax on top. He is also the third choice. How the hell do you get to such a dude?” FC Update report Driessen saying on Today Inside.
“It really is a laughable decision. A man who knows absolutely nothing about Dutch culture, has no network here… You need that in his position,” added Derksen.
“They took Overmars’ departure far too lightly, because then the important man fell away due to his own behaviour. Then they have something like: The director Van der Sar will catch that for a while.
“Director Van der Sar will catch nothing at all. He has been failing for years and is totally unfit for that position.”
