As the transfer window slams shut, so starts the time for clubs to look back on what they’ve achieved and haven’t during the market.
Outside of the UK, where it’s commonplace to have a sports director, there’ll often be press conferences so the media can ask questions about deals which failed and those which were successful.
Eibar have done that this week, putting sports director Fran Garagarza in front of the media. That gave him the opportunity to tell his story about getting the better of Newcastle United in talks for Yoshinori Muto.
The 28-year-old moved to Eibar on September 16th, on loan from the Magpies for the rest of the current season. When asked about the signings Eibar made from outside of Spain, Garagarza couldn’t refrain from a little brag.
Spanish newspaper AS quote him as saying: “Newcastle told us, either you reach some figures or Muto does not leave. We told them that it was impossible. A week later the Japanese forward arrived on loan to Eibar for the figures that we initially told them.”
Muto’s contract with Newcastle United expires in June 2022, and there’s the possibility of him returning to the Premier League club next summer, when his loan to Eibar will expire.
