Back at the weekend, the Portuguese media revealed Sporting’s interest in Coventry City striker Viktor Gyökeres.
It was claimed the Lions should soon make an attempt to land the 25-year-old, despite the Sky Blues requesting €20m for his sale.
Now Sporting seem to have a boost to sign Gyökeres. According to Correio da Manhã, the upcoming transfer of Manuel Ugarte is linked to this purchase.
The newspaper explains that with the Uruguayan midfielder going for €60m, that should allow the Lions to go big for the Coventry City player.
Correio da Manhã’s story is about Ugarte’s move to Chelsea, even though we now know that Paris Saint Germain seem to have taken the lead for the player in the past few hours. That shouldn’t change anything for Sporting, who’ll have that big fee in their pockets anyway.
It’s said Sporting initially had €15m saved for a striker, and this sale will allow them to get close to €20m.
The story highlights that the Lions should also work to convince Gyökeres, because the player was initially thinking of moving to a bigger English club. Sporting don’t have a place in the Champions League either, and will need big arguments to attract him to Lisbon.
