Benfica and Arsenal are both interested in Southampton youngster Gomes Rodriguez, according to reports today.
The claims come from Portugal, where outlet Glorioso 1904, which is dedicated to the Eagles, reveals the chase.
It’s claimed that Benfica see Rodriguez as a player for their U-23 squad, and Arsenal are one of the ‘many clubs’ who’ve been interested in the Southampton player as well.
The Lisbon side are said to be keen in opening negotiations with the Saints. The problem is that he’s currently 16, and can only move to Portugal when he turns 18.
Despite his young age, the striker has already made a couple of appearances for Southampton’s U-21 squad, as well as for the U-18’s.
Those appearances seem to have drawn the interest from both Benfica and Arsenal, although there aren’t any details on how long the chase from the Gunners has been going or how it may be progressing. They’re simply named as potential suitors for him.
Since Glorioso 1904 isn’t among the most traditional sports outlets in Portugal, we’ll take this with a pinch of salt and wait to see some confirmation from the local newspapers.
Given the obstacles to signing the youngster now, perhaps the Eagles are monitoring him to make an attempt in the future and he’s simply a name to keep an eye on the near future.
