Newcastle United have seen an approach for Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio turned down, with the Italian side not interested in letting him go.
That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by Area Napoli, and Tuttosport, who both say Newcastle’s efforts have fallen by the wayside.
The Magpies are expected to be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper this month after losing first-choice Nick Pope to a shoulder injury that could keep him out for a month or more.
They’ve been making do with Martin Dubravka for the time being but several reports have made it clear they may look to add someone else, with different names mooted as options.
One of the ones looked at was Di Gregorio, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who say Newcastle ‘have evaluated’ the 26-year-old because of Pope’s injury.
However, they met firm resistance from Monza, who have made it clear that the goalkeeper with not be moving for now. Their CEO, Adriano Galliani, does not want to be deprived of his number one and only wants to talk about a transfer in the summer.
Tuttosport back this up somewhat, stating that Monza ‘said no’ to Newcastle’s ‘attempt’ for the goalkeeper and that was ultimately that.
Whether the Magpies try to twist their arm with another attempt this month remains to be seen but for now, their initial efforts have been rebuffed.
